Grojogan Sewu waterfall is located in Beteng, Jatimulyo village, Girimulyo sub-district, Kulon Progo. The location is still in the area of Kembang Soka waterfall, Kedung Pedut, and Mudal River. It is called Grojogan Sewu because in Javanese it means a thousand showers.
The name Grojogan Sewu came from the very abundant of the water discharge.
According to local stories, the Grojogan Sewu waterfall has a relation with the Mahabarata legend. It is said that King Kresna asked his older brother King Baladewa to meditate in this waterfall area so that his brother would not participate in the Baratayuda war. Prabu Kresna chose this location because he thought that the swift flow of the waterfall would produce a sound that could muffle the sounds of war. It turned out that King Kresna’s efforts were successful; King Balarama remained imprisoned and did not know if a war was going on.
The location is quite far from the center of Yogyakarta City and takes approximately 1.5 hours without traffic. From Tugu Yogyakarta we can head towards Godean street, follow the road until we cross the Progo River bridge. Keep going until you find the Kenteng market intersection. Take the straight road to the west until you reach the very end of the T-junction; take the right direction until you reach Jonggrang Market. Follow the road until you find a T-junction with directions to Grojogan Sewu.
This waterfall is one of the favorite natural attractions in Kulon Progo. No wonder this place is always get much visitations, especially for young people who want to escape from the city life. It’s located in the Menoreh Mountains area makes the atmosphere very peaceful and the air is still very fresh. The favorite time for visitors is in the afternoon because they can enjoy the serene atmosphere. The beauty of the waterfall that spoils the eyes will not disappoint you, you can play water in the shallow part. The staff has provided a small park around the waterfall equipped with benches that can be used to rest while enjoying the beauty of the waterfall.
The facilities provided are quite complete, there are bathrooms, prayer rooms, and food stalls. For enjoying the Grojogan Sewu waterfall you need to pay Rp. 4000, – and pay a parking fee of Rp. 2000, – which is very affordable for a tour with extraordinary appeal.
