Wiguna Market: Presenting an Educational and Sustainable Thematic Market Concept in Yogyakarta
In order to support the development of the creative economy, preservation of local culture, and an environmentally friendly lifestyle in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, the DIY Regional Government welcomes and appreciates the implementation of Wiguna Market as a community-based thematic market that upholds the values of health, locality, and waste reduction.

Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle and the Local Economy

The products offered cover various categories such as culinary, handicrafts, personal care products, and functional goods that support a low-waste lifestyle.
In addition to being a shopping space, this market also serves as a place for education and community interaction. Visitors are invited to participate in various creative and family activities, such as workshops, art performances, and children’s literacy activities in an open space.
National Collaboration and Commitment to Sustainability

Peken Klangenan Kotagede: Community Cultural Market in the Heart of Yogyakarta’s Old Town Heritage
Amidst the historical atmosphere of Kotagede, Yogyakarta City, there is a community-based initiative that is reviving the pulse of local culture: Peken Klangenan Kotagede. Peken Klangenan, a traditional market with an educational and cultural nuance
comes from two Javanese words: peken, meaning market, and klangenan, referring to something that pleases the heart or evokes memories. This name reflects the market’s essence as a space not only for buying and selling but also for enjoying and understanding local culture in its entirety.
Every weekend, visitors are greeted by more than 30 curated tenants , including traditional culinary artists, artisans, local artists, and cultural preservationists. The products on offer are diverse, ranging from traditional foods like sego gule, miedes, dawet, bajigur, and jamu gendong, to local handicrafts made from natural materials. Visitors can also enjoy cultural performances such as angklung, gamelan, and captivating dance performances. Interactive classes such as batik and painting are also available, as well as an educational play area specifically designed for children, making the visiting experience even more enriching and enjoyable.
Cultural Identity Through Clothing and Attitudes
Peken Klangenan also prioritizes a visual and ethnographic approach to cultural preservation. All market managers and participants are invited to wear traditional Javanese clothing such as kebaya, lurik, and jarik cloth as part of their cultural identity and awareness. This is expected to inspire the wider community to embrace traditional clothing as a lifestyle, not just ceremonial attire.
A Social and Economic Space That Grows Together
Since its official opening in May 2025, Peken Klangenan has become a new magnet for local residents and tourists. With an average of 500–700 visitors every weekend, this market not only thrives as an alternative economic space, but also as a forum for intergenerational cultural encounters.
In addition to promoting local products, this activity also opens up space for cultural discussions, developing historical literacy, and creative community involvement through art and education.
