Curved lines follow the structure and shape of the stone to create the right harmony on the large stones. Like a symphony of music, the grooves or lines form a similar pattern as if formed by human hands with work, intention, creativity and taste. That was the first picture that impressed me when I first came to Luweng Sampang Waterfall. Two large stones flanking a small channel of waterfall that the water flowing never stopped sounding swift and beautiful.

Luweng Sampang waterfall has a height of approximately 5 meters, with a width of approximately 1.5 meters. Its right and left sides are a large rocks and resemble a small hill. The uniqueness of the Curung Luweng Sampang rock pattern has similarities to Antelope Canyon, United States, which distinguishes it from its rock color.

Location of Luweng Sampang Waterfall

Administratively, Luweng Sampang waterfall is located in Karangasem Hamlet, Sampang, Gedangsari, Gunungkidul, DIY. The route to this place is affordable through Jogja-Solo street due to its flat road and minimal winding slopes. In general, people who have visited to the waterfall choose the route from Jogja through the Jogja-Solo street to the Ganti Warno district. Follow the direction of the road to the southeast then you will arrive at Sampang village. If you feel confused, don’t be shy to ask it with the surrounding residents there.

Arriving at the Luweng Sampang, we are presented with interesting scenery, especially the stone motif, probably it is because the stone has been exposed to water for a long time so it erodes following the water flows. Two waterfalls will greet us with the sound of water flowing and open our eyes through the beauty of the rocks which continue to do their role as the river’s waterway.

Behind the Luweng Sampang waterfall there is a small tunnel that was said to be the place for the hermitage of Sunan Kalijogo. I got this story from Mbah Legiman, one of the local residents who was given the responsibility to look after the Luweng Sampang waterfall. According to a 75-year-old man, it remained safe despite being hit by floods, because it was located higher than the river flows. For Mbah Legiman, the existence of this waterfall is a gift from God that he must protect and preserve
