The beaches of Gunungkidul will never be end to be explored. Every single beach has its own uniquness as well as Wediombo beach. Although it is located in the end line of Gunungkidul and it is bordered on Central Java Province, Wediombo beach is always full of visitor. Wediombo beach is actually the furthest beach in Gunungkidul. This beach is located in Jepitu, Girisubo, Pendowo, Gunungkidul, Special Region of Yogyakarta. If we come from the city center of Yogyakarta, we will take about 2,5 up to 3 hours or about 80 km away. Arriving at Wediombo beach, the visitors need to walk about 200 meters and step down the stairs about 10 – 15 minutes. But, when they arrive at Wediombo beach the will forget directly their fatigue because of the wonderful views of this beach.
The name of Wediombo derives from the Javanese language “Wedi” which means the sand, and “Ombo” that means spacious. So, Wediombo is a beach which has a spacious stretch of sand. In addition, Wediombo beach has also more spacious area than other beaches in Gunungkidul. Just like its own name, Wediombo beach has a long wide and beautiful stretch of white sand. The views of Wediombo beach are also full of big coral cliffs.
The one which becomes the main attraction of Wediombo beach is the lagoon or the natural sea pool. This lagoon was created by a big basin between the coral cliffs. The sea water which flows through that basin makes this natural sea pool. Since it is behind the coral cliifs, this pool just has a gentle stream. Furthermore, this pool is sourrounded by the coral cliifs which’s directly bordered on the sea, so when the wave roll in the seashore those coral cliffs will break them and the stream will keep gentle.
The visitors are allowed to swin in this natural pool but they must keep being carefull because this pool is quite deep, it is about 1,5 meters. In other hand, swimming in Wediombo sea is prohibited because the wave in this beach is big enough and dangerous. The visitors are only allowed to play on the seashore where they can enjoy the stretch of the white sand.
Since it has big wave, Wediombo beach become the surfing favorit location. The wave’s height og this beach can reach up to 3-4 meters. Wediombo beach wave is big but it is quite stable also, so surfing activity is allowed. There is also surfing board rental here.
Not only swimming in natural pool and surfing, fishing is also the favorite activity in Wediombo beach. If the visitor wants to go fishing, they can go to the top of the cliif or the top of the coral cliifs to get the best fishing spot. There are a lot of local people who go fishing here. If the visitors are lucky, they will get zebra shark, panjo fish, and queen snapper of 20 kg. But, fishing needs more patience.
Don’t forget to capture the beautiful moments when you come to Wediombo beach because this beach offers captivating photo spot for doing selfie image with corals cliff background which becomes the wavebreakers in this beach. You can also have relaxed on the beautiful white sand while enjoying sunset. One of the best sunset photo spots In Gunungkidul is this beach because Wediombo beach looks towards the west. On certain months, the visitor can enjoy seeing the sun goes down horizontally.
If you want to stay over night, there are some homestay near Wediombo beach. However, this beach offers also camping ground area for campers. The camping activity in Wediombo beach becomes the young people’s favorite activity. You should better bring your own tent if you want to camp here. But you can also rent a tent to the beach administrator.
The ticket price of Wediombo beach is quite cheap. A visitor needs only to pay Rp 5000. The parking retribution costs Rp 3000 for a motorbike and Rp 5000 for a car. Moreover, the rental board surfing costs Rp. 100.000. The facilities provided are like spacious parking area, musholla, toilet, bathroom, dan foodcourt.
