The history of intelligence knowledge development or cryptology in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta was started from a small house located in the western side of Progo river. The Indonesian combatant studied the codes and ciphers in Ponijan house in Dukuh, Purwoharjo, Samigaluh, Kulonprogo DIY. Their activitiy was done before the Genereal Attack of March 1st 1949. After that, the house of Ponijan was known the house of cryptology.

The important of cryptology or intelligence science for a country becomes the main reason why the government of DIY through the Departement of Culture DIY built a museum about National Cryptologic Institution so the public society will know about the national cryptologic agency. National Cryptologic Museum is located in Kotabaru area, Yogyakarta. It was situated in the basement of the Museum of Perjuangan Yogyakarta. In this museum, various kinds of valuable historical collections about the world cryptology can be found.

Entering the room of this museum tourism destination, the visitors can see many things about cryptologic equipments used by the agents to do an investigation. In this place, the visitors can see also the equipment used by the couriers which one of them is the bycicle known as onthel to send the secret letters from code department to destination addresse. There are also some cryptologic equpiments for the intelligence agents to do their missions in this room.

One of those equipments is telegraph made in 1809. The Indonesian combatants undertook the telegraph station from the Dutch army and then used it as a nation benefits. There is also cryptologic machine of BC-543 from Sweden given by Dutch army after the recognition of Indonesian sovereignty in 1949. In addition we will also discover SRE-KG code machine from Indonesia that also completes the collections of this Cryptologic Museum.

Through Cuneiform collections that are displayed in the upper floor of this museum, you will remain about the era of the ancient Mesopotamia. At that time the Sumerian people developed the communication system in writing signs and words or called as pictogram to represent something. The ancient Greeks and Sparta had also the communication equipment namely Skytale, a cylinder with a strip of parchment wrapped around it on which was written a message. As the media of education, this Cryptologic Museum provides information center facility and multimedia technology game center.
